What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy for the first time can bring up a lot of emotions — nervousness, hope, uncertainty, or even relief. Whatever you're feeling, it's completely normal. Knowing what to expect can help ease some of that anxiety and set you up for a positive experience.
Your first session is often called an intake or assessment. During this meeting, your therapist will ask questions to get to know you — your background, what brought you to therapy, and what you hope to achieve. This isn't a test. There are no wrong answers. It's simply a conversation designed to help your clinician understand how to best support you.
You can expect your therapist to explain confidentiality, go over logistics like scheduling and insurance, and begin building rapport with you. Many clients say the hardest part is just making the appointment — once you're there, it feels much more natural than expected.
Here are a few tips to make the most of your first session: Be honest about what you're experiencing. You don't need to have everything figured out. Write down any questions you'd like to ask. Remember that it's okay if you don't click with the first therapist you try — finding the right fit matters.
At MCNY, we meet you where you are — whether that's in your home, at one of our offices, or through a secure telehealth session. Our goal is to make therapy as accessible and comfortable as possible from day one.
